What is Yoga?

Yoga is a philosophy and a physical way of life that aims to focus and harmonise the body and mind. Yoga has some of its roots in Hinduism. These days yoga has become a popular western health pastime and some people practice the basics of this form of natural body work at home with a DVD.

The philosophy is to help a person become balanced in mind and body. It could even be used to attain self-enlightenment or reflect upon the day. On a deeper level, Yoga aims to bind individual consciousness and awareness with superconsciousness- basically us and God or the whole. Even without its metaphysical teachings, is beneficial to the body because of its actions on muscles.

What to expect in a Yoga class

It's usually taught as a sequence of poses and breath exercises, although these days there are hundreds of variations and schools of thought. A session of Yoga is usually practiced in a group within a hall or open field. Alternatively, instructors can work one-on-one if a client wishes for a more personalised class.

The class will work through a variety of stretches and moves both standing up and sitting down. Each move is controlled and gentle. The student focuses on breathing deeply and balancing the whole body.

The human spine nurtures and supports the central nervous system. The condition of the spine is a critical part of our physical and emotional well being. Yoga exercises and invigorates the spine, stimulate the lymphatic system while also stimulating the flow of blood, chi and emotion.

What conditions can Yoga help?

The actions and techniques of Yoga help to remove toxins from the body, which, if allowed to accumulate, may cause pain and stiffness in the muscles and joints. The art of Yoga practice has been said to reduce stress, lower blood pressure, regulate the heart and create a general sense of wellbeing.

Onlookers see gently stretching and various poses but in fact there is a stimulation of the energy points of the body known as chakras. Through stimulating these points there is  a balancing of the energy flow.
